Horses have been helping humans since man walked the earth. They first sustained life as a source of food, then quickly became a work mate and a means of transportation. As time went on, new technologies have replaced horses and we have become less dependent on them for our physical needs. Although we gained much from that technology, we began to lose that special connection man had with his horse outside of it’s work purpose. Today, there is a new world of horsemanship growing, one where horse and man build relationships to help each other again, by learning and growing from the inside out. It is not about prestige or power. It is about using God’s resources to better ourselves and create long lasting heart changes.
A young man named Will experienced this kind of change when he met yet another new motivational speaker, Glory, a 20 year old Tennessee Walking Horse. Glory’s intense fear of starving drove her to violence and kept her from socializing with other horses appropriately when she was younger. Due to severe neglect and abuse, Will shared the same intense fear of starvation and also displayed inappropriate aggressive behavior. After spending 8 sessions with Glory, Will told his counselor that she had helped him find a part of himself he never knew was there. They understood each other instinctually, and Glory helped him willingly start down that road of recovery that she too had traveled.
